Ten Cents At A Time

The Story:
Every song has to have a little truth in it and this one is right out of my history book. I was delivering pizza, playing in a band and dreaming of Nashville. I was taking the dimes out of my tip money and stuffing them in a sock in my dresser. I planned on getting to Nashville if I had to do it “A dime at a time”
This song, in various forms, has gotten honorable mention in both the Billboard and CMT/NSAI song contests. I’ve tried and I’ll keep trying to get this one to George Strait.

This diner was not her destination
Hollywood wouldn’t let her in the gate
How quickly her spotlight turned to neon
Where she wears a smile, takes orders and waits

She’s going back to Texas ten cents at a time
Takes the change home every evening, separates the dimes
Pennies nickels and quarters she uses to survive
She’s going back to Texas ten cents at a time

She tells herself it’s just a part she’s playing
And this part has to play out on it’s own
She smiles though her heart and feet are aching
And her oscar is a one way ticket home

She used to dream of limousines, stars lit up her eyes
Now she dreams of busses back to Amarillo skies
