Loyal To My Heart

The Story:
Daniel Kleindienst is one of my favorite co-writers in Nashville. I get together with him every time our schedules permit. We challenge and push each other on every line of every song. Loyal is our version of the best friend’s/girlfriend love triangle. The musicians did a great job in the studio and that’s Ron Haddock and I doing our best Eagles impersonation on the background vocals.

The lake belonged to us that summer
Didn’t have a care but we had your daddy’s boat
Me and you and Kevin Thompson
Discovered Horseshoe Cove and whiskey coke
All those memories I can’t forget
Still leave me smiling with one regret

If I had been loyal to my heart
Maybe you would be here in my arms
I loved you so much then
But he was my best friend
If I’d only known he’d tear your world apart
I’d have been loyal to my heart

Kevin had that new red Mustang
Asked you out before I got the nerve
I never told you how I felt
But there were times when I was on the verge
I hid the truth from everyone back then
Especially from you and him

(If I had just been faithful if I had just been true)
(If I had only done what my heart said to do)
