Don't Be Afraid To Win

The Story:
This song was written to me. Songwriting in Nashville is 99.98% rejection. And until you get that “yes” it’s 100% rejection. You try to tell yourself it’s the song and not you that didn't measure up, but after a time it begins to weigh you down. I was starting to feel very defeated so I wrote this to give myself strength to get back up off the ground. Kenny Wilson outdid himself on guitars and steel on the recording.

Turned eleven that summer and my little league team
Could do nothing but lose week after week
Last game of the season we were down three to two
Coach said, “Here’s what you do”.

Hold your heads up don’t get down on yourselves
You’re just as deserving as anyone else
The past is behind you put your whole heart in
And don’t be afraid to win

Well I’d forgotten that victory when I was seventeen
I was dying for Sarah to go out with me
I felt so awkward and out of my class
My sister said, “It’s all in how you ask” ...so

Hold your head up don’t get down on yourself
You’re just as deserving as anyone else
The past is behind you put your whole heart in
And don’t be afraid to win

When I feel like giving up I’ve learned to tell myself now
That a winner only gets up once more than they’re knocked down ...so
